Silver Linings

Using any yarn imaginable, you can knit a purse, tote, or bag and line it without a sewing machine or felting. Learn to use fusible adhesives, ready-made canvas totes, quilting fabrics, and fabric glues to accomplish this. Examples of zipped, buttoned, snapped, tied and flapped closures will be displayed. Turn a skein of fancy novelty yarn into an eye- catching purse you will love. You will complete a purse in class. (Small materials fee: $2.00 for adhesives, students will bring their own fabric and knit swatches)

Sleeves Top Down

Make sleeves that fit by working them from the shoulder down toward the wrist. Lorna will cover drop shoulder, modified drop and set-in sleeves, with more time devoted to set-in sleeves. Seam options including no-sew, crocheted and picked-up methods will also be covered. These techniques will enable you to add sleeves to any vest or shell pattern you have. Cover your arms with customized sleeves!

Neck Down Poncho

This is the perfect class for the beginner who has knit enough scarves to want to learn more. Cast on, knit and purl are the only prerequisites. Students will choose yarns with Lorna's help (if taught in a shop), or be given specific yarn requirements ahead (if taught for a guild or conference). Gauge swatch, casting on and knitting in the round, increases and counting rows will be some of the steps for an easy, square poncho.

Easy Poncho

Another poncho class for beginners or knitters who want to venture into creative knitting. This poncho is knit as a large rectangle, then folded and sewn strategically to make a beautiful asymmetrical poncho. Almost any yarn can be used but a dk or light worsted is best. Novelty yarns, beads and fancy pattern stitches can jazz it up even more. Bring 450 yards of your poncho yarn and other various novelty yarns as desired in any amount. In class we'll knit together a miniature version of the poncho, in a size that fits an American Girl doll or similar toy. All of the design elements can be tried on this small poncho and then you can make the full size poncho on your own with confidence!

Button, Button!

You've hunted far and wide for the perfect button to finish off your sweater. Everything's too big, small, cheap, expensive, fancy, plain or wrong color. You have other options! This class gives you the creative options: knit matching buttons, paint, glue, embroider, crochet, mold, bake, use unusual items around the house or use supplies from your local craft store. In this 3 hour class we'll see dozens of unique buttons and do some hands-on creating. No special painting, embroidery or artistic talent needed for this class!

Hand-Dyed Yarn

Get lots of easy ideas for using had-dyed yarns in ways that will show them off at their best. Learn how to use simple techniques that give you control of the beautiful hand-dyed yarns you love. You will see dozens of garments that show not only pattern stitches that work well for these yarns, but other ways to show the yarns to their best. The emphasis is on combining hand-dyed yarns with other accenting yarns and using simple, easy patterns. The easiest knitting will look so dramatic with these yarns. Bring a variety of multi-colored yarns, all of similar weight. No homework; bring several sizes of needles ranging from 6-10.

Cards and Scrapbooks

Let the knitting spread into other areas of creativity! This workshop is hands-on fun using yarns, swatches, buttons, paper, scissors, glue, rubberstamps and more. You will see dozens of ideas for incorporating yarn and knitting with gift and greeting cards, journals, scrapbooks and photo albums. Make a gift card to go with your hand-knit gift using the same yarn. Or start a scrapbook of your knit projects. You will also get to make several cards to take home. Lorna will supply all materials except yarn scraps and swatches. (Small materials fee: $5.00 for paper, glue and other craft embellishments.)

Quick Knit for Baby

Baby sweaters are ideal: everyone loves them, they're quick to knit, they use little yarn, they can serve as a sampler for a larger sweater and there's always a baby that could use a sweater! Wouldn't it be fun to buy just a couple skeins of yarn and whip up a baby gift in a short time? This class will present a simple, generic cardigan shape sweater for a baby through toddler size. With this template and your yarn, you will be able to start knitting in class as well as having many ideas for future projects.

Twisted Cords

In this class you will practice many different types of ties or cords that can be used for finishing your knit projects, the type needed for hoodies, waistbands, booties, purse handles, etc. The cords all vary in thickness and style and serve different purposes for a variety of uses. We'll also show and discuss the possible variations of each one. The cords presented will be theses and more: Reinforced I-cord using an I-cord maker, twisted cord using a kitchen mixer (or a wooden spoon or pencil), Grandma Helen's Cord taught to Lorna by her Grandma, standard braid and tips on using it, crochet chain only better, knit chain only better and other unusual cords.

Fabric Strips

Open a whole new source of knitting yarns by cutting into fabric! Learn many ways to cut the fabric, join ends and tips on what types of fabrics work best. Find out what tools are available to make the cutting faster, easier and more accurate. Then try knitting with different widths of strips. Practice by making a small pouch or purse in class. See and discuss what kinds of designs work best with fabric knitting and how to combine it with other yarns and textures.

Knitting Random

Are you such a perfectionist that it´s hard to use leftovers because you might run out of a yarn mid-stripe and it won´t match. We can´t change that “precise personality” but we can make your knitting appear more random, less structured. Perfectionists welcome! You will learn about formulas to follow and sequences to use that give you a guide while allowing your repeat to look like it just happened by chance.

Swatches into Totes

If you´ve been good and knit all those swatches, you have many samples of past projects. If you don´t have gauge swatches, then play with leftovers and single skeins. Learn how to combine your swatches and leave class with a “tote of memories”. Go wildly creative using all the buttons, beads, trims, lace and other embellishments and handles to decorate your tote. Also a great place to use quilt squares, crochet work, embroidery, pretty fabrics, cross stitch or needle-point. Pretty much any textile art that you can think of!

Purse Handle

Make purse handles using different craft supplies AND learn ways to stabilize your knit handles. Also learn where to get the unusual materials.
